The 2024 Nautilus series by Prime Video reinvents Jules Verne’s classic Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea by exploring Captain Nemo’s journey from an Indian prince stripped of his birthright to an infamous submariner. Played by Shazad Latif, Nemo becomes an antihero with a powerful vendetta against the East India Mercantile Company, responsible for taking his family and freedom. Nemo steals the advanced submarine Nautilus and assembles a skilled, misfit crew to navigate the treacherous Indian Ocean in his pursuit of justice. Alongside the challenges of the vast underwater world, Nemo confronts imperialistic forces, dark mysteries, and existential questions about revenge and redemption.

The cast includes Georgia Flood, Thierry Fremont, Céline Menville, and appearances by actors such as Richard E. Grant and Anna Torv. Written and executive produced by James Dormer and directed by Michael Matthews, Nautilus aims to capture Verne’s imaginative world with a modern lens, touching on relevant themes of resistance, colonization, and identity. The series is produced by Moonriver TV and Seven Stories, with support from talented executives like Johanna Devereaux and Chris Loveall, who bring both period authenticity and a fresh visual style to the series.

Reportedly produced on a substantial budget, the series showcases high-caliber effects and sets to depict both the Nautilus and the unforgiving ocean environments. Though the exact budget remains undisclosed, it is known that the series required extensive resources, particularly for its complex underwater scenes and intricate set designs. Filmed on location in Australia, the production involved intensive technical work to bring Verne’s world to life, from crafting the submarine’s steampunk design to enhancing the eerie oceanic atmosphere.

Set to premiere in December 2024, Nautilus aims to draw viewers into an adventurous yet introspective world, where Nemo’s personal quest echoes broader questions about power, justice, and resilience, keeping the essence of Verne’s vision while presenting it with modern depth and intrigue.
